University of California, Los Angeles: dorm packing list

What to bring to a University of California, Los Angeles dorm: Twin XL sheets, a mattress topper, towels and a shower caddy, under-bed storage, a surge protector, a desk lamp, a fan and laundry supplies. US dorm rooms come furnished with the bed, desk, chair and dresser, so you're packing what goes on and in them.

Below is that list in full, plus the three things that genuinely change by school: the California climate you're moving into, the room types on campus, and the appliance and prohibited-item rules only University of California, Los Angeles Housing can confirm. The universal version lives on the complete dorm packing checklist.

Bed size: nearly every US dorm uses an extra-long twin (Twin XL) mattress — standard twin sheets won't fit. Buy Twin XL, and double-check your school's housing page for the rare exception. Packing for California: warm & dry (California)

California climate: warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. You'll rarely need a heavy coat or snow gear — a light jacket and a rain layer for winter are plenty. Many older halls skip A/C, so a fan helps through a warm early fall; breathable bedding is the safe call.

What University of California, Los Angeles's campus means for your list

City campus (Los Angeles). Shops and same-day delivery are close, so don't over-buy before move-in — bring the essentials and pick up bulky items (fan, drying rack, storage bins) once you've seen the room. City dorm rooms tend to be the tightest, so favour vertical storage and under-bed bins over floor furniture.

With around 33,475 undergraduates — the 5th-largest of the 64 California campuses covered here, laundry rooms and lifts are genuinely congested in the first weeks — a drying rack and a proper laundry bag save you more time here than at a smaller campus, and a shower caddy you can carry one-handed matters on a busy floor.

Published on-campus room & board runs about $18,369/year — $4,763 above the $13,606 median across the 1071 schools in this dataset and the 31st-priciest of the 64 California schools here. That figure normally covers a meal plan, so check what your plan includes before buying a mini-fridge and microwave — at many halls the fridge is the only one you actually need.

What's already in your University of California, Los Angeles dorm room

Do not pack these — US dorm rooms come with them: an extra-long twin bed frame and mattress, a desk and chair, a dresser or built-in drawers, and a closet or wardrobe. Bedding, a desk lamp, a mini-fridge, a microwave, storage bins and a fan are almost never supplied, and are what your packing budget is actually for. If you're in one of the apartment-style halls, a kitchen comes with the unit — but cookware, dishes and utensils do not, so budget for a starter kitchen set on top of this list.

What not to bring to a University of California, Los Angeles dorm

US residence halls consistently ban candles and open flames, halogen lamps, hot plates and exposed-element cooking appliances (toasters, toaster ovens, grills), space heaters, extension cords without surge protection, and pets other than fish. Most cap mini-fridge size and microwave wattage; many now restrict air fryers.

Common categories, not an official list — bans differ by building and change most years.

University of California, Los Angeles's actual housing rules

Bed size: Extra-long twin, 36″×80″ — you bring your own linens, pillows and towels.

Fridge & microwave: One mini refrigerator per room, under 6 cubic feet, and it may not run inside a closet or any enclosed space. A standalone microwave isn't allowed at all — UCLA cites limited electrical capacity — but a combination microwave-and-mini-fridge unit is permitted.

Prohibited items: Coffee makers, hot water dispensers, toasters, toaster ovens, standalone microwaves and any open-coil appliance; halogen lamps; candles, incense and open flame; grills and gas stoves; electric space heaters and air conditioners; hoverboards; waterbeds; materials for building a loft; dartboards; animals other than fish in a tank up to 10 gallons; and weapons — including replicas and imitation firearms, fixed blades longer than 2.5 inches, and pepper spray, batons, tasers and stun guns.

What's provided: A bed, a desk and desk chair, and storage space for each resident.

Two rules trip people up here. A standalone microwave is banned outright on electrical-capacity grounds, so a combination MicroFridge unit is the only permitted way to reheat food in your room. And UCLA's weapons policy explicitly includes pepper spray, tasers and stun guns, which students often assume are fine as personal-safety items. A fish tank also needs every roommate or suitemate to agree, with no more than one tank per bedroom.
